Anthropic, the tech giant behind artificial intelligence (AI) assistant Claude, has filed for a public listing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It’s a notable filing that positions Anthropic as a litmus test for whether public investors will keep funding massive AI deals, amid rising debt and unclear returns.

  • Anthropic was valued at $965bn in its last private funding round and is reportedly seeking a valuation of $1.5 trillion to $1.75 trillion in its initial public offering (IPO). It’s aiming to raise as much as $100bn, potentially surpassing SpaceX’s $86bn IPO fundraise, the largest on record.

  • Founded in 2021 and having experienced explosive growth since, Anthropic competes fiercely with OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT AI assistant.

Per its S-1 filing, Anthropic pulled in $4.6bn in revenue in 2025, compared to $386mn in 2024 and a mere $41mn in 2023. In the first half of 2026, revenue rose rapidly to $16.3bn, compared to $1.1bn in the first half of 2025.

The striking revenue growth has been accompanied by similarly growing losses, as Anthropic spends massive amounts on building out AI data centers and hiring talent. It reported a $13bn net loss in the first half of 2025 and $81bn in the first half of 2026, although the latter mostly stems from a $72bn non-cash accounting charge related to fluctuating values of its convertible notes and other financing instruments.

Since its inception in 2021, Anthropic has raised $141bn from private investors, its S-1 filing revealed. It had 5,300 employees as of September 2026, compared to 940 at the end of 2024, highlighting its rapid growth.

  • Anthropic was founded by seven people, including the brother-sister duo Dario and Daniela Amodei. Dario serves as the AI giant’s chief executive officer, while Daniela is President. They were executives at OpenAI before leaving to launch Anthropic in 2021; Dario was Vice President of Research and Daniela was Vice President of Safety and Policy.

  • Per the S-1 filing, Dario earned roughly $18mn in compensation in 2025, and Daniela earned $16mn, mostly from stock and option awards. Their equity stakes in Anthropic place them as billionaires.

Anthropic filed to list on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the “ANT” symbol.
