According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchanges Commission (SEC), Uber will lay off about 3,700 full-time employees, representing 14% of its workforce. The layoffs will primarily affect the company’s customer support and recruiting teams. As part of cost reductions, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has also agreed to forego his base salary for the remainder of 2020.
Uber’s business has been significantly hit by a coronavirus pandemic that has restricted travel and day-to-day movements across the globe. Ride-hailing, in particular, has been hit, as many persons have shied away from transport rides in the middle of a widespread pandemic. It’s such that Uber’s primary competitor, Lyft, recently cut 1,300 jobs. Uber’s layoffs also come on the heels of travel company Airbnb cutting 25% of its workforce.
Uber has said that it’ll incur roughly $20 million in costs related to severance and other benefits as a result of the job cuts.
