Walmart is now set for a partnership with movie studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for creation of content for Vudu, The video-on-demand service it acquired in 2010. This comes as a move to increase its user base which falls below counts of that of competitors including Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Video.

Vudu will now create original series based on franchises from MGM’s vast movie catalog to be exclusively licensed and available on its free, ad-supported Movies On Us service. As per Walmart’s statement to various news outlets,  A previous report of the company considering its own video streaming service turned out not be correct although such move in future time isn’t ruled out.

Vudu is also planning to roll out a new “shoppable” video ad format later this year which will include ability to make purchases from Walmart.com which counts as move to boost both the e-commerce and streaming sides of its business.

Being the no 2 competitor and e-commerce leader behind Amazon, Moves like this don’t come surprisingly as Walmart is currently on a spree of activities aimed at boosting its e-commerce presence which includes a just recent acquisition of fashion brand Eloquii for a reported $100 million to add to its e-commerce offerings.
