Tech giant Google has walked away from a plan to rent office space for as many as 2,000 workers in the Irish city of Dublin, pulling away from what appears to be one of the city’s biggest real estate deals in recent years. Google, already a major player in Dublin’s real estate market, backed away from its plan and didn’t provide a specific reason as to why. The US-based company already employs thousands of workers in Dublin. A likely reason for Google’s pull-out could be the coronavirus outbreak which has led hundreds of thousands of workers globally to work primarily from their homes. It’s such that another popular tech company, Pinterest, recently backed out of a deal to lease 490,000 square feet of office space in San Francisco, despite a $90 million consequence to its decision.

Tech companies like Google, Twitter, and Facebook have played a major role in the Irish real estate scene. Facebook alone currently employs more than 4,000 people across Ireland, similar to Google, which currently has 8,000 employees based in the country. With a coronavirus outbreak that has affected real estate markets worldwide, eyes are presumably keenly open for real estate trends and more so concerning Google in the Irish capital of Dublin. Who knows, the company may resort to bigger leases in future time, depending on how things play out as a result of the global pandemic.
