Just this Monday Morning, Uber drivers in Australia took to a strike refusing to pick up passengers over protests against its payment strategy with the Lobby group RideShare Drivers United (RDSU)
calling for drivers to turn off the Uber app between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. over several changes made by Uber which it states as being in damage of “already poor working conditions.”.
RDSU demanded of Uber to stop using an upfront pricing system with a return to a pricing system which paid drivers for the actual distance and time travelled.
Other demands includes providing drivers with an option to opt out of the UberPool service along with an increase in UberX rates by at least 15% to account for road costs and constant increase in car maintenance by drivers for the service.
Tens of thousands of drivers took to the calls across several Australian cities refusing to pick up passengers demanding of Uber to meet meet requests within 10 days or face more disruption.
Over 5,000 voters voted on RDSU’s website of taking part in the Uber log-off with over 700 out of a total 960 as of writing voting on the status of Uber drivers being employees as opposed to contractors.
Normal service has since returned to UberX and UberPool with Uber itself having not commented as of current on the Australian protests which covered drivers across the cities of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, and Hobart.
