BMW and Jaguar Land Rover have announced they will work together to develop electric vehicle parts, with a joint team based in Munich, Germany that’ll work on developing electric motors, transmissions and power electronics. The team will focus on its design and engineering aspects while both automakers produce the EV parts in their own manufacturing facilities.
BMW and Jaguar Land Rover says the collaboration allows them to take advantage of production planning costs, economic benefits from joint purchasing and cost efficiencies arising from shared development. Both automakers will work on “Gen 5”, a mix of an electric motor, transmission and power electronics in one bundle for BMW’s electric vehicles. BMW plans to launch it starting next year in the BMW iX3 vehicle.

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover will build upon their work on “Gen 5” to follow-up subsequent partnerships. BMW launched its first electric vehicle, the BMW i3 in 2013, and has quite good experience in the electric vehicle market. Likewise, Jaguar Land Rover marked its foray into the electric car market with the Jaguar I-Pace, a vehicle that got an order of up to 20,000 units from Alphabet’s self-driving arm, Waymo.
“…With Jaguar Land Rover, we found a partner whose requirements for the future generation of electric drive units significantly match ours.” BMW’s engineering chief Klaus Fröhlich said in a press release. “Together, we have the opportunity to cater more effectively for customer needs by shortening development time and bringing vehicles and state-of-the-art technologies more rapidly to market” He said.
