Daimler Trucks has set up a new division to focus on driverless technology, effective from yesterday, the 1st of June 2019. The new unit, the “Autonomous Technology Group”, is tasked with overall strategy and implementation of Daimler Trucks’ automated driving goals. At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Daimler announced it’s investing more than 500 million Euros ($560 million) in driverless trucking.
The newly established unit will work towards level 4 autonomous driving, after previously hitting level 2. The new division will be led by Peter Vaughan Schmidt, who is moving from his position as Head of Strategy at Daimler Trucks. He’ll report to Daimler Trucks CEO Martin Daum.

The setting up of this new division comes on the heels of Daimler Trucks’ acquisition of a majority stake in Blacksburg, Virginia-based automated driving company Torc Robotics. Torc Robotics has tested driverless vehicles on both public roads and controlled courses in over 20 U.S. states. Its testing has included a a coast-to-coast trip across the U.S. and also in densely packed streets such as those in the city of Las Vegas.
