General Motors has announced it will invest $24 million in a new round of upgrades to its 2.85 million-square-foot Fort Wayne Assembly plant — opened in 1986 — in the state of Indiana. The automaker is doing this to boost production of the new Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups, with main focus on the crew cab models.

This move makes sense given that sales of the crew cab models of both pickups were up 20% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year. GM is projecting another increase in sales for this year’s second quarter. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups were launched in the second half of last year.

The $24 million will be put towards enhancing the manufacturing facility’s conveyors and other tooling to support increased production. The work will be completed by summer. This included, GM has now invested a total of more than $1.2 billion in the Fort Wayne Assembly plant since 2015. The company has invested a total of $23 billion in U.S. manufacturing since 2009.
