Auto manufacturer Hyundai has ventured into the robotics scene with a kick-off of development of its Vest Exoskeleton (H-VEX) wearable industrial robots which was demonstrated August last year in the Hyundai-KIA North American factory and stands as part of the five areas of future innovation growth selected by Hyundai earlier this year.

The auto manufacturer is developing technology in three areas of robotics: service robots, wearable robots and micro-mobility and is also in the process of strategic cooperation with several companies centered on robotic and artificial intelligence technology.

The first H-CEX wearable robot developed for industrial use is a knee joint protective device that helps workers maintain the sitting position and weight just 1.6 kg yet is durable and capable of withstanding weights of up to 150kg.

It features waist, thigh and knee belts that can be easily fitted and adjusted to the user’s height and also three different angle settings (85/70/55). Hyundai aims to test the new H-VEX along with the H-CEX in its North American factories at the end of this year.

The H-VEX wearable robot reduces pressure on workers’ necks and backs through an addition of 60kg of strength to the user when their arms are used overhead. It’s expected to be very effective at increasing work efficiency and also preventing injury.

In addition to industrial robots, Hyundai is also gearing for introduction of a ‘Hotel Service Robot’, ‘Sales Service Robot’, an ‘Electric Vehicle Charge Manipulator’ and a ‘robotic personal mobility’ solution in future time. The company demonstrated a Medical Exoskeleton (H-MEX) at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which assists elderly people and paraplegics with walking and movement across staircases.

The medical robot is currently in the process of gaining required approval by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the U.S. FDA for commercialization as a medical device to kick off.
