In a push towards the development of electric vehicles, the Korean automaker Hyundai has unveiled a dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform that’ll be the foundation for the company’s new lineup of electric cars in coming years, whereas Hyundai has an ambitious plan to introduce 23 electric vehicle models and sell 1 million units worldwide by 2025.

The new ‘E-GMP’ platform (pictured above) will form the basis for a cohort of electric vehicles that Hyundai will roll out beginning 2021, including a high-performance model that the automaker says will accelerate from zero to 100kph in less than 3.5 seconds and have a top speed of 260kph.

The E-GMP platform will form the basis of Hyundai’s upcoming Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 electric vehicles, with the two among a cohort of upcoming EVs that Hyundai claims will provide a range of up to 500km on a full-charge and be able to add up to 100km of driving range in just five minutes of charging.

Hyundai just like other automakers is ramping up its work in the electric car market, which continues to be growing globally. Globally, Hyundai is one of biggest automakers so its unveiling of a dedicated BEV platform is very notable. In the past, the company had already unveiled some electric vehicles both under the Hyundai and Kia brands which it controls.

In all, the Hyundai Motor Group has a grand plan to have sold more than 1 million electric vehicles worldwide by 2025, a quite ambitious plan given its current electric vehicle sales are nowhere near that number.

The Hyundai Motor Group’s subsidiary brand Kia has its own plan to make electric vehicle sales make up 20% of its total sales by 2025. It recently published early mockups of seven dedicated electric car models that’ll be released sequentially from now through 2027.
