The payment networks Mastercard and Visa have said that they’re probing allegations against the popular pornography site Pornhub.com, following the publication of New York Times column which asserted that many videos hosted on Pornhub depict child abuse and that the popular pornography site profits from videos posted without consent.

Mastercard and Visa are payment networks adopted by Pornhub and could both impose penalties if the site is found to be in violation of their policies. Mastercard has said that it’s investigating the allegations against Pornhub with its parent company MindGeek’s bank while Visa is also doing something similar.

The recently published column on the New York Times accused Pornhub of monetizing illegal and harmful content, explicitly “child rapes, revenge pornography, spy cam videos of women showering, racist and misogynist content, and footage of women being asphyxiated in plastic bags”. It asserted that Pornhub isn’t doing enough to police its platform and has thus let its site foster a sizeable amount of illegal and non-consented pornographic content.

The column drew reactions from renowned persons globally, including the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the hedge fund manager Bill Ackman. As a result, Mastercard and Visa are probing Pornhub’s parent company, MindGeek, for possible violations that may lead to them limiting their business with the site.

Based out of Canada, Pornhub is known to be the most 10th trafficked website in the world and the 3rd most visited adult website globally.
