Steve Wozniak, the famed Apple co-founder and technology veteran, has taken YouTube to the courts over crypto scams facilitated on its platform that leverage the names and likeness of popular celebrities to trick others into sending them cryptocurrency over the net. Wozniak is suing YouTube for being “unresponsive” to repeated requests to take down fraudulent videos that used his name and likeness to trick people. He’s actually suing alongside 17 other alleged victims of identity theft used to facilitate crypto scams on YouTube.
“YouTube has been unapologetically hosting, promoting, and directly profiting from similar scams,” Wozniak stated in his suit. He compared YouTube’s seemingly lackluster reaction to such scams to that of Twitter, which recently faced similar issues, but reacted on “that same day” by contrast. Wozniak and the other alleged victims are compensatory and punitive damages.
Earlier this week, YouTube defended itself in a similar case by referencing the federal Communications Decency Act, a 1996 law that ruled that internet providers cannot be held liable for content posted on their platforms by users.
