Luxury carmaker Bentley has pledged that it’ll switch its entire production lineup to battery electric vehicles by the year 2030, starting by producing only plug-in hybrid or battery electric vehicles by 2026 before a full switch to battery-electric vehicles in 2030. Already, Bentley has converted its headquarters in the UK into a factory tooled for producing electric vehicles and plans to launch two new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles next year.

Bentley’s plans lie in sync with that of its parent firm Volkswagen to switch to fully-electric vehicles by the year 2030. Under its plan, Bentley’s first pure electric model will be launched by 2025.

Bentley’s announcement marks a major turnaround for a luxury car brand that was founded over a century ago. Theoretically, a switch to electric vehicles will be easier for Bentley given its annual production numbers are in the single-digit thousands. The luxury car brand seems to be vying for a future that’ll see it compete with a significant number of upcoming electric carmakers including those focused on the luxury sector.

Bentley touts its new electric plan as one that’ll “create a sustainable, consistently profitable business model for the next 100 years”. Notably, the luxury carmaker has announced its plan amid a Covid-19 pandemic that took quite a hit on its business.
