As first reported by CNET, Eric Schmidt has quietly departed Alphabet, the parent of tech giant Google, having given up his role as an adviser to the company earlier this year. According to CNET, Schmidt gave up his adviser role sometime in February after nearly two decades of being associated with Google, beginning as its CEO in 2001. Schmidt took over Google three years after its founding and held its chief executive position for 10 years. He stepped down from his chief executive role in 2011 but continued as executive chairman of the company for four years more, plus an additional two years as chairman of Alphabet after Google was placed under the new entity. In 2017, he stepped down as executive chairman and took up the role of a Technical Advisor.

Schmidt’s reported departure comes on the heels of reports of him somewhat taking up a new career of being a liaison between Silicon Valley firms and the U.S. military-industrial complex. Schmidt notably serves as the chairman of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Innovation Board, a position he has held since 2016. Under that position, he advises the U.S. military on technology-related projects. Schmidt has, however, stirred some conflict-of-interest concerns over his interest in Google, which may sometimes offer products to the U.S. military. As an early executive of Alphabet, Schmidt reaped great financial rewards and still holds billions of dollars worth of shares in the company. This implies a financial incentive in line with that of the company.

In December of last year, Alphabet’s two famed co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, announced that they were stepping down from active management roles at the company. They both handed over to Sundar Pichai, who previously led Google but now leads the whole of Alphabet following the handover. The two co-founders, however, still remain board members at Alphabet. Schmidt, on the other hand, seems to have departed Alphabet entirely, ending a 19-year tenure at the company.

As of now, Alphabet hasn’t officially confirmed Schmidt’s departure. We’ll look to update if official confirmation is provided.
