Facebook has reached a deal to acquire Mapillary, a Swedish crowdsourced mapping startup, which will now join Facebook to help bolster the company’s open mapping efforts. Mapillary’s flagship product is a mapping app that provides access to street-level imagery crowdsourced from individuals globally. Post-acquisition, Mapillary’s app will still be available for use.
Mapillary was founded in 2013. The company is known to have raised about $25 million in total equity funding from investors including Sequoia Capital, Samsung, BMW i Ventures, and Atomico. Financial terms of its acquisition by Facebook weren’t disclosed.
Mapillary announced the acquisition in a blog post.
