The incoming United States President Joe Biden is said to have chosen Janet Yellen for the position of US Treasury Secretary, whereas she’s set to replace Steve Mnuchin of the Trump administration if sworn in. The pick would make Yellen, who is a renowned economist, the 78th Treasury Secretary of the United States and the first-ever woman to hold that position.
That Yellen is getting the position of US Treasury Secretary isn’t surprising, given that she has long held public service roles in her capacity as an economist. Notably, she served as chair of the US Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2018 before the administration of the current president Donald Trump replaced her with now-chair Jerome Powell.
Yellen, aged 74, has had a long career in the public sector, beginning as an economist with the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in 1977–78. Together with a long career in the public sector, she has held many academic roles at universities including Harvard, UC Berkeley, and The London School of Economics.
Along with Yellen, Biden has also picked other administration and cabinet members including former Secretary of State John Kerry to be his special presidential envoy for climate and Antony Blinken, a former Deputy Secretary of State and Deputy National Security Advisor, as the US Secretary of State.
Biden, after a projected win, is set to become the next US President and with Kamala Harris as his Vice President. A transition to a new administration is set to be formalized on the 20th of January, 2021.
