Niantic, the gaming company behind hits like Pokémon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, has announced the appointment of Megan Quinn, a partner at venture capital firm Spark Capital and a board member at Niantic, as Niantic’s chief operating officer (COO). Quinn will be transiting from a board seat, which she got to occupy after investing in Niantic on behalf of Spark Capital, to a full executive role at the company. Quinn took up a board seat at Niantic in 2017.

As COO, Quinn will lead Niantic’s business operations and international development as Niantic prepares “for the next phase of global growth and scale,” according to a press statement from the company. Who knows, that next phase could be an initial public offering (IPO). Niantic has as of late been accelerating its investments in augmented reality (AR), mapping, and diversifying its business at large. Just last month, the company acquired 6D.ai, a startup that develops mapping APIs for augmented reality apps. Niantic also notes having a “multi-year pipeline of new products and experiences.”

Quinn, thanks to her past experiences, apparently brings a lot to Niantic’s table. She actually helped build Niantic while it was still a startup being incubated under Google. Then at Niantic, she led the company’s internal map building efforts. Post-Niantic, she became a product lead at payments giant Square before leaving the company to take up a role at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins. She later left Kleiner Perkins to join Spark Capital as a partner, under which she led investments in companies including Niantic.

“I’m very excited to continue our partnership and work closely with Megan to build the future of Niantic,” Niantic CEO John Hanke touted in the company’s press statement.
