Postmates has unveiled a robotic delivery device built from the ground up to deliver small items over short distances effectively. The new autonomous robot, Serve pairs a patented “Socially-Aware-Navigation system” with proprietary Postmates software to join the Postmates fleet of over 350,000 couriers in delivering items to its users.

The new robot contain advanced set of sensors including Velodyne Lidar and makes use of an NVIDIA XAVIER processor for interaction with the environment. Customers can interact via a touchscreen and cameras placed on the self-driving delivery vehicle that can carry 50 lbs and go 30 miles on a single charge.
To communicate to pedestrians, it has dynamic lighting in its eyes and a light ring on top to indicate movement like a change in direction, Postmates says it could instantly pick up orders and transport them short distances away to its couriers away from occupied parking spaces and traffic for smooth delivery.

Prototypes are being tested at senior living communities in Northern California where they learn to operate prior to being launched by the delivery unicorn.
