Gaming platform Roblox has announced that it has surpassed 100 million monthly active users, a far cry from just 100 users when it first launched more than a decade ago. To celebrate the milestone, Roblox has released a free and exclusive virtual item: a gold bar shoulder accessory that its players can grab for a limited time.
The announcement comes just a week ahead of this year’s Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), where hundreds of game builders, scripters, artists and designers will assemble from around the globe to get early clues at the latest features Roblox plans to add to its platform. This year’s conference, the fifth concurrent installment, is holding in London.

Roblox’s 100 million monthly active players sets it above Minecraft, one of its biggest competitors. Minecraft has 91 million monthly active players, according to Microsoft. Both have similar gaming platforms and also stretch their similarities elsewhere. Mojang, the game studio behind Minecraft, was acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014. That just happens to be same valuation Roblox got when it raised $150 million in funding last year. This is likely co-incidental, but makes for a good ponder.
Roblox’s 100 million monthly active players have dished out more than 50 million user-created experiences. Roblox currently supports seven languages, a necessity given its users are spread across the globe. San Mateo, California-based Roblox also says nearly 50% of its players update their avatar each month, a statistic that signals pretty good engagement.
Roblox has made some recent moves to recent its brand, including a partnership with Tencent, China’s biggest gaming company, and another with soccer club FC Barcelona. The deal with FC Barcelona lets Roblox users to equip their avatar with two versions of the soccer club’s new 2019-20 home kit. Such deal is seemingly a way to generate buzz for its gaming platform and incentivize its gamers with additional features.
