Electric carmaker Tesla has launched its first own fast-charging infrastructure in the German city of Berlin as the company seeks to attract more buyers from the European markets. On Thursday, Tesla unveiled new supercharger equipment on a Berlin research campus, with the company stating that it’s looking to launch even more in target cities to court potential customers worried about access to charging infrastructure.
“Now, as part of our commitment to make Tesla ownership easy and convenient for everyone including those without immediate access to home or workplace charging, we are expanding out supercharging network into city centres,” Jeroen van Tilburg, a Tesla personnel who oversees charging infrastructure for Europe, said in a press statement.
Germany is apparently a key target market for Tesla, with the electric carmaker already working on the construction of a new automotive factory there. Recently, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk visited the German capital of Berlin for a meeting with the country’s Economic Minister. His visit majorly centered on the establishment of a manufacturing facility in the country that’s expected to provide thousands of jobs. Production at the plant, which is currently under construction, is expected to begin in July of next year. Tesla plans to produce half-a-million electric cars at the plant annually following completion.
