Ride-hailing titan Uber has pledged that all vehicles on its platform will be electric by the year 2040. As part of the pledge, the company has said it’ll invest $800 million through 2025 to help drivers switch to electric vehicles. Particularly for cities in Europe, Canada and the US, Uber has committed to be emission-free by the year 2030. The company’s commitment comes along with the expansion of Uber Green into the US, Uber Green being a feature where users can particularly request to ride in electric cars on the Uber app. Uber Green will come at a cost of a $1 surcharge to US-based users.
In June, Uber’s primary competitor, Lyft, pledged to have an all-electric fleet by 2030. Uber seems to be following suit and particularly taking advantage of regulatory support and advanced infrastructure in the US, Canada, and European regions to facilitate all-electric rides by 2030. Unlike Uber, Lyft didn’t commit any financial resources to help drivers switch to electric vehicles.
Uber is currently facing business hassles resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. In the second quarter of this year, the company lost $1.8 billion on revenues of $2.2 billion.
