The National Basketball Association (NBA) and tech giant Microsoft have joined forces to place “virtual” fans in basketball games using the Microsoft Teams app and giant display screens. Under a partnership between both companies, basketball game courts will be equipped with 17-foot-tall (5.2 m) LED screens that wrap three sides of the arena and those screens will then be filled with fans and supporters who log in through the Teams app using a new feature dubbed “Together mode” that’s meant to simulate a group of people sitting in a room.
The partnership will kick-off when the NBA begins its coronavirus-interrupted season on the 30th of July in the city of Orlando, Florida. The NBA suspended its season in March after a player for the Utah Jazz basketball team tested positive for the coronavirus. For safety reasons, the NBA will be holding games at only one location, the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, where players, staff, and media will be regularly tested for the coronavirus and quarantined if called for.
