Volvo has announced that it’s limiting top speed of all it cars to 180 kilometers per hour (kph) beginning 2020. It says this is part of “Vision 2020”, the company’s ambitious target “for no one to be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by 2020”. It cites research that identifies three remaining concerns for automobile safety, of which speeding is a prominent one.

Volvo says it’s also investigating on how a combination of “smart speed control and geofencing technology” could automatically limit vehicle speeds around schools and hospitals in future time. According to data from the US National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, 25% of all traffic fatalities that occurred in the US in 2017 were caused by speeding.

Other areas identified as major concerns for auto safety include distraction and intoxication (drunk-driving). “We want to start a conversation about whether car makers have the right or maybe even an obligation to install technology in cars that changes their driver´s behaviour, to tackle things like speeding, intoxication or distraction,” Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson said in a statement. “We don’t have a firm answer to this question, but believe we should take leadership in the discussion and be a pioneer.”

The Swedish automaker will also present ideas to tackle the problem areas of distraction and intoxication at an event holding on the 20th of March.
