Tech giant Alphabet’s self driving unit Waymo has now made a new move with a subsidiary setup in China’s largest city, Shanghai as Alphabet finds more ways to get back into the Chinese market years after mainly exiting operations from the region.
As per a filing with the China’s National Enterprise Information Publicity System, Waymo established a wholly owned subsidiary by name of Huimo Business Consulting (Shanghai) with registered capital of 3.5 million Yuan ($509,165) with the scope of the unit including business and logistics consultancy in addition to services related to the design and testing of autonomous car parts.
This filing which was made on the 22nd of May list the unit’s legal representative as Sand Hill Road based lawyer Kevin Bradley Vosen.
Waymo has already confirmed the setup of a legal entity in China with the company stating of several people already working there.
After an exit of its key search engine business from the Chinese market 8 years ago, Alphabet has made new attempts of entering the region with a recent reported plan to launch a version of its search product in the Chinese market which Google CEO Sundar Pichai described as ‘exploratory’.
Google’s other notable moves in the region includes
a partnership with JD.com, an investment in Chinese mobile game live-streaming platform Chushou and a launch of an AI game on WeChat as it learns and gain more information on how to go about in the market.
