Airbnb has settled a major legal battle over data-sharing policies with the city of New York, as made known by a recent press statement from the company. The long-running legal battle stemmed from a request from the city of New York that Airbnb turns over data on its hosts in the city in order to track down those who rent out their homes in violation of city regulations. Airbnb’s settlement entails an agreement to turn over the requested data on its hosts and could cost the company thousands of reservations in the city. Such a settlement, on the other hand, helps bolster’s Airbnb’s service as a legally recognized one in one of its largest markets.
New York City happens to have been one of Airbnb’s earliest markets and a major one for the company. When the city passed an ordinance to require accommodation marketplaces to share data on its hosts sometime in 2018, Airbnb fought against it by launching a lawsuit against the city. Expedia’s HomeAway, another popular rental marketplace, also fought against the ruling. Both companies now appear to have reached private settlements with the city.
Airbnb says it’ll be holding a webinar with hosts in New York City on the 29th of June to shed more light on the settlement and how it’ll affect listings in the city.
