The iPad has outgrown the iOS and will be getting a new OS specifically made for it. This was made known at this year’s Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), where the iPad maker also previewed iOS 13 and unveiled a new Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR. Apple at its conference previewed iPadOS, a new OS for iPads that’s however built on the same foundation as iOS.

With iPadOS, iPad owners will be getting features tuned specifically to the large display of their devices. Features of the iPadOS include:

  • A new and redesigned Home screen with a layout that shows more apps on each page.
  • Simultaneous work with multiple files and documents from the same app now possible.
  • More ways to use Apple Pencil. For example, iPad users can now mark up and send entire webpages, emails or documents by swiping Apple Pencil from the corner of the screen.
  • A more enhanced Files App with iCloud Drive support for folder sharing and support for external storage devices. There’s also local storage, zip and unzip, and new keyboard shortcuts.
  • Safari now automatically loads the desktop versions of websites. There’s also support for new features like a download manager, 30 new keyboard shortcuts and enhancements to browser tab management.
  • Improved text editing. iPad users can now select text with just a swipe and use new gestures to cut, copy, paste and undo.
  • Dark Mode.
  • Custom Fonts can now be installed from vendors like Adobe, Founder, Morisawa and more.
  • A new floating keyboard.
  • Sign In with Apple, see the iOS 13 preview for clarity. It’s basically a new way to sign in to apps and websites on Apple devices via Apple ID.
  • A new Apple Maps experience: with better pedestrian data, more precise addresses, more detailed land-cover and broader coverage. There’s also Look Around, a new feature that’ll let users view street-level imagery of places.
  • Performance improvements that Apple says leads to faster Face ID unlock, and a new way to package apps that Apple says lessens App Store download sizes by up to 50%, makes app updates up to 60% smaller and results in apps launching up to twice as fast.
