Apple’s Homepod smart speaker didn’t really live up to hype although it has recently captured 6% of the Market as of recent selling 600,000 units according to recent analysis by Strategy Analytics.
Even why capturing this slice of the market, Major competitors Amazon, Google, Alibaba and Xiaomi took the largest part of the market coming with a 43.6%, 26.5%, 7.6% and 2.4% for the Chinese companies with the combined companies leaving the remaining 13%+ to other players and startups who will have to innovate and disrupt to extensively win in the market.
This new statistics comes as competition has rapidly increased with each companies market share being diluted amidst increase in no of sales of smart speakers generally and customers going for different brands among a wide selection to choose from. Amazon had a 94% market share last year and has gotten to 43.6% whilst still being the leader amidst huge competition from a slew of technology companies and startups.
A total of 9.2 million smart speakers were sold in the first quarter of this year which is a very huge jump in comparison with the 2.4 million smart speakers sold in last year’s first quarter, This shows a huge continuous increase in the adoption and production of more features for smart speakers making it more attractive and needful to buyers.
Out of this 9.2 Million speakers sold in the first quarter, Amazon shipped a whooping 4 million of them while second market leader Google shipped 2.4 Million which is huge but less than 3 times what its major competitor Amazon shipped.
This marks a kind of slow start for Apple Homepod sales but given that Apple just began its sales in the second month of this year and this also marks its first foray into the Smart Speaker space, It might greatly increase sales with time and heavily build up its customer base grabbing more market share in the process.
