Self-driving startup Aurora Innovation is expanding tests of its driverless vehicles into the U.S. state of Texas, as announced by the company. Within the next few weeks, Aurora, a Palo Alto-based company, says it’s bringing a “small” fleet of driverless vehicles to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Aurora currently tests both self-driving vans and trucks and actually aims for its first commercial product to be in the trucking market.

Texas has seemingly become a hotbed for autonomous vehicle testing. The state also plays host to the likes of Uber, TuSimple, Argo AI, and Waymo.

Aurora itself mostly kept its technology somewhat secretive until very recently, when it began offering rides to reporters and members of the media. The Palo Alto-based company was notably founded by a trio of autonomous driving veterans by the names of Chris Urmson, notably the pioneer of Google’s self-driving project (now known as Waymo), Sterling Anderson, a former Tesla executive, and Drew Bagnell, who worked on autonomous vehicles at Uber after having previously run a research lab at the famed Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

Since its founding, Aurora has raised some $690 million in funding. Investors in the company include the likes of Amazon and venture capital firm Greylock Partners.
