The world’s biggest cloud-computing company, Amazon Web Services (AWS), will invest 207.6 billion rupees ($2.8 billion) to build multiple data centers in the Indian state of Telangana, as made known by a tweet from the state’s minister for information technology, K.T. Rama Rao. The data centers will be built across three locations and are set to open in mid-2022, Rao said on Twitter.

Already, Amazon Web Services has a data center region in the Indian city of Mumbai. The company is now looking to add another in Hyderabad, which is the capital and the largest city in the state of Telangana. Hyderabad is a major hub for IT professionals in India so it’s no surprise that AWS is looking to set up data centers there.

Amazon Web Services opened its first office in India in 2011 and has maintained a fairly large presence across several cities in the country. AWS has major customers in India and as such, maintains a strong domestic presence to support its customers there.

This year saw the launch of new major AWS data centers in South Africa and Italy. New data centers are also under construction in Indonesia, Spain, Japan, and Switzerland. Amazon’s new data center region in India will be its second in the country and its eleventh in the Asian continent. Worldwide, Amazon maintains 24 data center regions that serve thousands of global customers.

AWS is the world’s biggest cloud-computing company and contributes significantly to the revenues of its parent firm, the e-commerce giant Amazon. In 2019, AWS generated $35 billion in revenue and $11.6 billion in net income for Amazon.
