French ride-sharing unicorn BlaBlaCar has made an acquisition of rival Russian carpooling service BeepCar snapping up the service from Russian internet conglomerate Mail.Ru in what marks its second acquisition this year.
The ride-hailing services which counts presence across 22 countries is making efforts on international expansion with this notable acquisition being the 9th purchase made since BlaBlaCar’s inception 12 years ago.
“Through this acquisition we’re doubling down our commitment to offer an ever more reliable carpooling service in Russia and address the demand of millions of Russians for convenient and efficient long-distance mobility solution” as stated by the company’s co-founder and CEO Nicolas Brusson.
This deal will also strengthen BlaBlaCar and Mail.Ru’s partnership with the french ride-hailing service committing to further promote ride-sharing services through Mail.Ru’s platforms while the Russian internet company continues to focus its efforts on the fields of food delivery, classifieds and cross-border trade.
Boris Dobrodeev, Mail.Ru Group CEO stated “We are pleased to announce that we have entered into a long-term partnership with BlaBlaCar where BeepCar will be integrated into their network. We’ll focus on further developing our eCommerce initiatives, while the audience will be able to keep using their favorite carpooling service”.
BlaBlaCar got into Russia 4 years ago and quickly took the lead as the carpooling leader in the country with the addition of Beepcar which has seen over 5 million app installs, BlaBlaCar would get to increase its reach in the country which it already counts 15 million members in and stands as its largest market out of a global community of 65 million users.
Financial terms for the deal have not been disclosed with it including a move which will see BeepCar traffic redirected to BlaBlaCar driving advertising revenue for Mail.Ru as part of its marketing partnership.
