BMW’s creative consultancy unit Designworks just unveiled details of a collaboration with five star Taiwanese airline EVA Air for creation of a new peculiar, eccentric and novel business class seat.

Applying their first-hand experience of global cultures, Designworks worked on solutions to complement their own identity while reinforcing their unique, premium and global positioning.

The target for this collaboration was to steer away from a ‘conventional’ seat design to one crafted with a more unique and mature design made to create bold and differentiated experiences for passengers.

Challenging ‘conventional’ methods by focusing on the end-to-end passenger in-cabin experience, Designworks’ output was focused on streamlining stowage, whilst maximizing spaces for productivity and entertainment.

“At a time where consumer expectations continue to rise across their daily brand interactions, mobility industries must constantly adapt to rapidly changing customer needs”, Design Director Johannes Lampela from Designworks’ LA Studio stated. “For the aviation industry this means balancing flexibility with a structured environment, providing privacy without isolation, as well as complete connectivity within a premium and relaxed setting.”

“We recognized that EVA business class experiences needed to focus on bringing fresh and memorable interactions to its passengers, making service, design, and brand work together. Our goal was to take a proven seat platform and make it unique to EVA”, he added.

Both firms traversed the passenger experience with a focus on the fields of privacy, service, interaction, stowage, and amenities. Heavily influenced by architecture and furniture design, This collaboration resulted in the creation of seamless space which integrates features smoothly and provides sufficient horizontal work surfaces.

It’s geared at professional travelers seeking a productive and yet relaxing on-air environment. Wool carpet, natural leather and rich custom textiles used during crafting boosts the luxury status while also keeping it comfortable and hard-wearing.

The new seat is showcased on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and marks stand-out design characteristics created for an international business audience with an eye on the Taiwanese region.
