Facebook has hired Ajit Mohan, The CEO of Hotstar, India’s largest streaming service operated by 21st Century Fox with Mohan now leading its Indian operations as he takes on the roles of managing director and vice-president of Facebook India.
This move represents a very notable one with Hotstar being a major digital service in India used by over 100 million people as Mohan now takes his in-depth experience in the Indian market from his time as CEO of the company.
It also notably comes as Facebook works on grabbing a share of the streaming market with more investments put into acquiring broadcasting rights for offering premium quality content to consumers.
“India is one of the largest and most strategically important countries for Facebook,” Facebook’s Vice-President of Business and Marketing Partnerships, David Fischer, said in a statement.
“As we think about what it will take to achieve our mission of bringing people together and building community, we know that investment in India is critical,” Fischer added “Ajit’s depth of experience will help us to continue to have a positive impact in India across communities, organizations, businesses and with policymakers.”
Mohan is coming to Facebook at a time when it plans to expand in Indian region while also being under fire over usage of its WhatsApp service for circulation of fake news which has led to several violent incidents.
The social networking giant has made several moves to curb this which includes the hiring of a ‘Grievance Officer’ by name of Komal Lahiri who will be based in the U.S. while focused on WhatsApp’s operations in India, Its largest market as of current.
Mohan is set to officially mount his position as next year as he prepares his departure from Hotstar.
