Postmates — the on-demand delivery company valued at $1.85 billion that’s also expected to hit the public markets soon — has hired Ken Kocienda, a long-time Apple engineer, that’ll be joining Postmates X, the company’s unit tasked with developing its delivery robot, Serve. Kocienda is joining as Principal Software Engineer.

At Apple, Kocienda worked on software teams that created the first versions of the Apple Watch, the iPhone, the iPad and the Safari web browser. His works at Apple includes faces for the first Apple Watch, algorithms for 3D Touch and the home button, UI elements for SpringBoard, and the two-lens Portrait filter. Kocienda also invented autocorrect for the first iPhone and holds more than 50 patents related to his work at Apple.

Kocienda also doubles as a bestselling author, known for his book, Creative Selection: Inside Apple’s Design Process During the Golden Age of Steve Jobs. The book focused on his more than 15 years of experience at Apple.

Kocienda is joining San Francisco-based Postmates’ more than 800 employees. The company operates one of the top on-demand delivery services, available in nearly 3,500 cities across the U.S. and Mexico. Postmates’ users can order from more than 500,000 merchants signed up on its platform.
