Volkswagen’s 2019 Bonneville Jetta just recorded a track speed of 210.16 mph (338.15 kph) at the Bonneville Salt Flats during the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association’s (USFRA) World of Speed event representing a beat of the current Southern California Timing Association’s (SCTA) Blown Gas Coupe class record of 208.472 mph.

The new vehicle built by vehicle specialists THR Manufacturing based out of the city of Ventura surpassed this through the aid of a modified EA888 engine and an exceptional aerodynamic shape which enables a drag coefficient of just 0.27 for top speed.

The vehicle’s 2-liter modified direct-injection and turbocharged engine was packed with unique specs for high output with new direct-injection and turbocharged connecting rods, pistons, valves, camshafts, turbocharger, and an exhaust system for exceptional performance which ensured delivery of a 600 horsepower output at 8500 rpm.

The Bonneville Jetta went through many changes from stock to run at high speed on salt with lowered suspensions, special Salt Flat wheels and a limited-slip differential being among major changes applied to gain ultra performance.

Its interior was stripped and outfitted with full track safety equipment including a roll cage, racing seat, harness and fire suppression system in addition to a pair of parachutes to slow it down.

Veteran Salt Flats racer Scott Goetz, who drove the Bonneville Jetta, stated: “It was a terrific experience to drive this car on the salt. The car inspired a lot of confidence at very high speeds. I have no doubt that we could go even faster by running some more boost, but we are very happy to have the record, knowing that there is more to come in the car if we need it.”

Volkswagen

“Achieving this speed at Bonneville is a demonstration of the quality, durability, power, and efficiency of the Volkswagen TSI engine series and the stability and aerodynamic efficiency of the all-new 2019 Jetta,” Hinrich J. Woebcken, Volkswagen President and CEO stated of this achievement “This record underlines the sporty credentials of our all-new Jetta and also gives a hint at the future of the GLI model, since this car uses a modified version of the GLI’s powerful EA888, 2.0-liter TSI engine.”

As of lately, Volkswagen has been on a motorsport achievement spree with several other achievements hit in recent times including a June victory at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb event with its electric I.D. R race car.
