Vistaprint, an online printing company and a subsidiary of the Irish publicly-traded printing giant Cimpress, has announced that it’s acquired 99designs, a popular freelance platform for graphic designers. 99designs has been acquired by Vistaprint’s parent company Cimpress and will now be housed under Vistaprint as a result but while continuing to operate as a standalone brand. Financial terms of the acquisition weren’t disclosed. 99designs as a private company was founded in 2008 and had raised $45 million in funding throughout its existence. Among its backers include venture capital firms like Accel and Harrison Metal along with entrepreneurs Stewart Butterfield (Slack) and Anthony Casalena (Squarespace).
As a brand housed under Vistaprint, 99designs will continue to be led by its current chief executive Patrick Llewellyn, who will now report to Robert Keane, Cimpress’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer. Vistaprint says it plans for significant post-acquisition investment in 99designs to expand the company’s team and accelerate its pace of technology and product development. Currently, 99designs operates global offices in the US, Germany, and Australia. The company itself is headquartered in the Australian city of Melbourne.
