Cable giant Comcast has announced it’s extending free access to its Xfinity brand of public WiFi hotspots across the US to anyone who needs them, including non-customers, through the end of this year. Comcast is doing this as cities across the U.S. begin to gradually re-open after widespread shut-downs due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company is also trying to avert some hardships brought upon by the coronavirus pandemic by offering its public WiFi hotspots for free. Comcast previously announced that it was making its Xfinity brand of WiFi hotspots free for 60 days.

Comcast isn’t actually new to providing free access to WiFi on the heels of emergencies. In the past, after local emergencies such as wildfires in California and the recent tornadoes in the city of Nashville, Comcast provided free WiFi access to residents. Comcast’s public WiFi network happens to be the largest of all telecom providers in the US. It’s available at both outdoor and indoor locations across the country.

According to Comcast, hundreds of thousands of people have taken advantage of its public WiFi freebie amid the coronavirus pandemic. The overall usage of the Xfinity network has also skyrocketed, according to Comcast.
