Social media giant Facebook has made another major move which has signaled its efforts in the field of cheap designing as it has now hired Google’s Chip Development lead Shahriar Rabii, A notable entrepreneur and Stanford alumni who was also involved in the starting of two semiconductor companies and will now lead Facebook’s chip development efforts taking the official position of a vice president and the Menlo Park based company’s head of silicon.
This move was first reported by Bloomberg late yesterday.
Facebook along with many other tech giants recently has made moves to up its own chip designing programs instead of relying on major suppliers including Intel and Qualcomm amongst others. Google whom Rabii was poached from has been a major recruiter of chip design talents with the company having snapped up several talents from Apple and other companies to spearhead its chip development’s efforts for its devices.
Rabii has spent almost 7 years at Google where he first took on the role of Director of Engineering when his startup was transitioned into Google according to his LinkedIn profile.
Facebook has been reported to be working a tablet for video calls along with a smart speaker which may see the company make use of custom chips for the devices along with its several large Data Centers and Oculus’ VR products.
It’s currently unclear exactly what specific effort Rabii will be leading in Facebook’s chip designing efforts but we might know in time as the company continually unveils new software and hardware products as it doubles down on Artificial Intelligence and other ventures to expand its services.
