Around the same time frame Samsung released a new Galaxy Watch, popular smartwatch maker Fossil also released a new watch – the Fossil Gen 5 — that’s powered by Google’s Wear OS. The Fossil Gen 5 has a touchscreen, increased storage than previous Gen models, and is powered by a Qualcomm chipset. The new smartwatch will be able to answer calls directly once it’s linked to an iPhone, a feature that’s already supported for Android phones. Other features of the Fossil Gen 5 include:
- Extended battery life, compared to previous Gen models
- 1GB RAM and 8GB storage
- Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 [chipset]
- A microphone and swim-proof speaker
- A 1.28-inch AMOLED screen
- Google Assistant support
- A 44mm case
The Fossil Gen 5 is already available for purchase, retailing for $295. If you recall [as said in the first paragraph], the Fossil Gen 5 will support direct voice-calling on the iPhone. The word “will” is used because that feature is not yet available, but will come [as an over-the-air-update] in form of a proprietary app sometime this fall.

“We’ve made multi-day battery life for touchscreen smartwatches possible with one touch – a disruptor for smartwatches on the Wear OS by Google platform. And, we’re leading the industry on Wear OS by Google by enabling tethered phone calls for iPhone users,” Fossil’s Chief Commercial Officer, Greg McKelvey, said in a press release. “Both advancements are the result of our unrelenting focus on advancing wearable technology. We’ll continue to integrate the latest tech features our customers need with the styles they love.” He said.
The Gen 5 comes in six color options.
