Russia has made tougher internet laws over the past 5 years requiring search engines to eliminate some search results, messaging apps to share encryption keys with security agencies and social networks to store data of Russian citizens in servers located in the country.
This has caused clashes as social media firms have refused to store information on servers in the country, messaging service Telegram founded by Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov being a main opposition to this rule. Telegram is registered under a parent firm, Telegram Messenger LLP in the U.K. and has refused to comply with laws requiring sharing of encryption keys with security services in Russia, a country where it counts a large user base in.
