ICE Seeks $100M+ Cloud Contract

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, an agency that’s over time drawn controversy surrounding its work with major software companies, is apparently seeking more tech services and has put out a contract opportunity for a cloud deal that’ll cost at least $100 million over five years.
The agency has posted the cloud contract opportunity on the US Homeland Security Department website, noting that the contract covers the management of infrastructure hosting on Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, two major cloud providers.
ICE isn’t new to contracting with tech companies and has over time worked with major companies including Dell, Amazon, Microsoft, SAP Concur, and Salesforce. Sometimes, a company working with the law enforcement agency has drawn ire from some of its employees, as in the case of Microsoft and its subsidiary GitHub, Amazon, and online furniture retailer Wayfair.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has regularly spurred controversy over its treatment of detainees in its custody. Most recently, the agency was accused of performing forced medical procedures including the removal of reproductive organs by at least 19 women.
The ICE has particularly come under attention in the regime of the current US President Donald Trump. Since Trump took over in 2016, the agency has ramped up its enforcement work and, as a result, constantly met the limelight. Before now, the agency already had major contracts with various software firms and is apparently continuing on that path even amid controversy.
The $100 million+ contract the ICE just put out will cover infrastructure work on the cloud hosting services of Amazon and Microsoft but won’t see direct involvement from the two tech giants.
