Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary Waymo is planning to launch what will count as the world’s first commercial driverless car service early next month as per a new report from Bloomberg which cites a person familiar with the plans.

As per Bloomberg, The service will operate under a new brand name being kept secret and will compete directly with Uber and Lyft. If this happens, It’ll mark a notable moment for the entire self driving industry which has involved lots of tests with no full commercial service launched yet.

Waymo is said to not be planning a big launch for this but taking on the route of starting small with maybe dozens or hundreds of authorized riders in the suburbs around Phoenix where it already counts a test group of 400 families as Early Riders who have rode on its vehicles for over a year.

Alphabet’s self-driving unit has long stood as the leader in the self-driving space having began early and garnered 10 million miles as of last month. Being the first will launch will surely further its leadership in the industry amid other competitors like GM, Uber, Lyft, Ford, Daimler-Bosch and several others.
