Electric carmaker Tesla has seen registrations of its vehicles in China soar to a record high, with 14,976 China-built Teslas registered in the country in the month of June alone, a 32% increase from the previous month and the highest so far in the country. Tesla began delivering China-made vehicles at the beginning of this year. According to the China Passenger Car Association, Tesla is heading towards accounting for a quarter of total electric vehicle sales in China. As of June end, there were 49,761 registered Teslas in China.
Unlike in the U.S. where Tesla dominates electric vehicle sales by a wide margin, the electric carmaker faces bigger competition in China, where brands including BYD, Xpeng, Shanghai Auto, and Zotye are major producers. Tesla is only one out of a few foreign manufacturers that sell electric vehicles in China.
Tesla began constructing a large production facility in the city of Shanghai, its first outside the U.S., in 2018. The facility began rolling out Tesla Model 3s in October of last year. The Chinese market, notably the world’s biggest market for electric vehicles, is a key target for Tesla as it seeks to expand its business.
