U.K. Based Coding Laptop maker Pi-top raises $16 million in Venture round to expand Global Capabilities

Ed-tech and modular hardware startup Pi-top known for its project-based computer science and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) learning tools has now raised $16 million in funding from VC firm Hambro Perks and Committed Capital to continue to expand its “capabilities in manufacturing, marketing, sales and operation” and drive global growth.

This investment round brings the total raised by the 4 year old startup to $22.5 million amidst Pi-top’s aim of expanding its learning services to more regions.

Pi-top has manufactured over 100,000 devices since its inception and has grown its team to a number of 80 with offices in Texas, China and its headquarters in U.K.

The startup is notable for its flagship hardware product, The “pi-top” laptop coming at a price of $320 and being a modular laptop which provides several tools for DIY projects and helps its users learn to code and work on various hardware and software projects.

The pi-top is powered by the widely used Raspberry Pi computing technology and provides the flexibility of modification and addition of accessories to make STEAM based learning more applicable and easier.

The laptop comes with an accompanying Inventor’s Kit along with several optional additional accessories which include an integrated speaker and a prototyping board with the Inventor’s Kit which provides 20 projects including the use of a smart robot, a music maker and other projects which make coding much fun to learn with the use of applicable and interesting equipment.

Jesse Lozano, pi-top’s CEO and co-founder issued a statement about this investment saying “This latest round of funding reflects the value of the company’s vision and strategic direction as we strive to transform education through learning by making,” He continued “We will use the investment to continue to expand our capabilities in manufacturing, marketing, sales and operations to drive our global growth.”

We’ve grown quickly and added fantastic talent because of our continued focus on education and learning outcomes in the classroom. We continue to stay true to our mission to deliver inspirational learning by making outcomes to students.”
