Earlier this week, Apple held a keynote event where it debuted the iPhone 11, alongside its Pro and Pro Max variants. On that day, Apple also announced the launch dates and pricing models for the Apple TV+ video subscription and Apple Arcade game subscription service. Apple TV+ will launch on the 1st of November, costing $5 per month. Apple Arcade on the other hand will launch in 4 days time (19 September), also costing $5 per month.

Alongside the iPhone 11, Apple debuted a new seventh-generation iPad, and the Apple Watch Series 5, the fifth iteration of the popular Apple Watch lineup. The Apple Watch Series 5 comes with never-seen before features in an Apple smartwatch, including an “Always-On Retina” display, which allows users to look at the time, or whatever is on the home screen without having to raise or tap the display; new location features, ranging from a built-in compass that’ll tell the user what direction they’re facing to a feature that measures the wearer’s elevation level; and international emergency calling directly from the smartwatch in over 150 countries (provided the user gets the costlier cellular model). With respect to this, the smartwatch has a feature that’ll trigger an automatic emergency call if the watch senses the user has taken a hard fall and stays motionless for about a minute.

The Apple Watch Series 5 will last 18-hours on full charge, with Apple claiming the “Always-On Retina” display doesn’t affect battery life. It’ll come with watchOS 6, the sixth version of Apple’s custom smartwatch OS, which comes with additional health features such as the new Cycle Tracking app (for tracking menstrual cycles) and a Noise app that lets users measure the sound levels of their environments (a useful feature in a case where the user attends usually noisy events like musical concerts or sport matches).

Apple has also set-up a new experience, dubbed Apple Watch Studio, that’ll let customers pick their preferred case and band combination before purchasing the smartwatch. Customers will be able to do this directly at Apple stores.

The Apple Watch Series 5 starts at $399 for the GPS model, and $499 for the GPS+cellular model. Apple has also decreased the cost of the popular Watch Series 3 to $199 for the GPS model and $299 for the GPS+cellular model. Orders for the Series 5 are already open, although it’ll begin shipping in five days time (20 September).
